Settlement of Pile Supported Mat Foundations
The settlements of four pile supported mat foundations were monitored over a period of 14 years. The mats were supported by 88, 105, 706, and 708 piles. Pile lengths ranged from 17 m to 27.5 m. Load tests were performed on instrumented single piles to determine their load capacity and load distribution along the length. The subsurface conditions at the site consisted of 3m to 4.6 m of dredge soils fill underlain by overconsolidated, stiff to very stiff, clay, loose to medium dense sand and stiff to very stiff, overconsolidated clay. The observed settlements were compared with settlements calculated using four different theoretical methods. Based on the study, a simple correlation is proposed to compute pile group settlements using measured or computed single pile settlements.
