Commemorating Historic Engineering Landmarks in Canada
In Canada a government appointed body, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC), is responsible for recommending historic places to the Minister of the Department of Canadian Heritage for commemoration; and Parks Canada, a federal agency, provides support to the Board through evaluating sites, erecting commemorative plaques, and contributing professional expertise and cost-shared funding to facilitate the preservation and interpretation of historic places designated of "national historic significance". Although the Canadian program of national historic site commemoration embraces all fields of history, in recent years there has been a marked effort to enhance the commemoration of historic engineering landmarks. This paper presents the Canadian approach to commemorating historic engineering landmarks; the guidelines developed for evaluating historic engineering landmarks; and what has been done to date in commemorating historic engineering landmarks in Canada.
