Undergraduate Geotechnical Lesson Modules Based on New Orleans Levee Failures
Geotechnical engineering case histories, with their realistic boundary conditions, present unique challenges as well as opportunities for an instructor. The paper deals with the levee failures in New Orleans, associated with Hurricane Katrina. Unlike most other failure case histories, almost all of the data on this case were publicly available and students were able to get a complete understanding of the problem. However, the actual conditions were more complicated than in an average undergraduate "textbook" project. In this paper, the author discusses how he developed classroom lesson modules and student assignments based on the levee failures during Hurricane Katrina. The site and boundary conditions needed to be sufficiently simplified to be suitable for an undergraduate geomechanics course, while keeping the essential elements of the problems unchanged. This allowed students to use commonly available analytical tools to solve problems and also appreciate the effects of actual site constraints and existing conditions.
