Hands-On Undergraduate Geotechnical Engineering
A primary goal of the geotechnical engineering program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is to integrate field and laboratory experiences into the undergraduate curriculum using a hands-on approach. The faculty feel strongly that students must have a complete understanding of geotechnical field and laboratory testing procedures if they are to appreciate the judgment required in geotechnical analysis and design. A unique aspect of the Cal Poly geotechnical engineering program is that undergraduate students have the opportunity to gain extensive experience with field testing equipment. Several undergraduate courses incorporate field testing, thus allowing students to work with the program's trailer-mounted cone-penetrometer testing system and truck-mounted drilling rig. Described within this paper is Cal Poly's "hands-on" geotechnical engineering program. Highlighted are experiences that the faculty have had incorporating field and laboratory testing procedures into the undergraduate curriculum. In addition, a brief discussion focuses on technical and financial support provided by industry. This support has greatly enhanced the capabilities of the program.
