Practical Reliability Approach in Geotechnical Engineering
Practical reliability procedures are illustrated for several common geotechnical engineering problems. Sensitivity information from reliability analysis is discussed and compared with other approaches. Specifically, reliability-based designs with respect to ultimate limit states are illustrated for a shallow foundation and an anchored sheet pile wall; reliability analysis with respect to serviceability limit states is illustrated for a laterally loaded pile incorporating one-dimensional random field. Comparisons are made with design based on partial factors and with Monte Carlo simulations.
