Unique Seepage Cut-off Barriers for Lockport Canal Wall Rehabilitation Lockport, Will County, Illinois
Major Rehabilitation of the Lockport Waterway Canal Walls required construction of two grouted seepage cutoff barriers. The barriers were located along the left descending bank of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) at approximately River Mile 291.1 and River Mile 293.1. Each cutoff barrier was to tie into the existing concrete canal wall. The purpose of the grout zones was to provide a solid, impervious and stable structural mass, reduce water leakage, and create a rigid body of embankment. The project was complicated by the nature of the embankment materials to be grouted, which consisted of random rock fill ranging in size from sand to boulders. The grouting contractor implemented automated data acquisition of grouting operations using its proprietary system. Verification testing with triple-barrel wireline coring and split barrel sampling of the grouted embankment along with falling head permeability assessments were used to confirm the success of the program. This paper summarizes the difficult ground conditions, grouting program and verification testing data for the embankment.
