Integrated Planning of Sustainable Stormwater Management in the City of Malmo, Sweden
In the City of Malmo in Sweden sustainable stormwater management has been used more systematically since the late 1980's. Today all new developments in the city are planned with special consideration of the drainage of stormwater. New developments are if possible built up along constructed open drainage corridors, which are laid out at a very early stage in the planning process. A close co-operation between the different technical departments in the city and an active involvement of the public has proved to be of utmost importance for a successful implementation of the concept of sustainable stormwater management. Two examples of how sustainable stormwater management has been implemented in Malmo are presented. One of them illustrates how the concept has been applied in an existing settlement for upgrading an overloaded combined sewer system and the other how an open drainage corridor is laid out for handling stormwater from a new development. The experiences of sustainable stormwater management in Malmo over the last decade has been transformed into a policy document, which has been jointly developed by all technical departments in the city and which has been approved by the politicians in the city.
