High Strain Dynamic Testing of SPIN FIN™ Piles
PND Engineers, Inc. (PND) has performed extensive testing on their trademarked SPIN FIN™ piles over the last 30 years to better understand and utilize these piles. SPIN FIN piles are most commonly used to provide geotechnical resistance due to large tensile and compressive forces, but are unique due to the disturbance of the soil during the driving process. The ultimate tensile capacity is derived from the pile’s skin friction and uplift capacity of the finned portion of the pile. This paper highlights two projects in which the authors performed high strain dynamic testing (HST) on SPIN FIN piles. The HST testing provided estimates of the ultimate tensile capacity with a high degree of accuracy, including one project with restrikes in soft marine sediments to determine the soil “setup.” The purpose of this paper is to present background on the project geotechnical conditions, SPIN FIN pile design challenges, construction pile driving data collection, and signal matching of reduced data.
