Construction of a Modernized South Pole Station: Progress and Challenges
This paper describes progress on the construction of the United States Antarctic Program's Modernized South Pole Station, managed by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This project, formally known as South Pole Safety and Environmental/Station Modernization (SPSE/SM), has entered the seventh year of a ten-year construction schedule, with a planned 2007 completion date. This paper addresses elements of the design, budget, logistics, construction schedule, resolution of construction and design conflicts, and construction progress to date.
