Some twelve or fourteen years since, the author, as Assistant Engineer to the late Major James C. Post, was directed to thoroughly investigate the subject of movable dams, as applied in Europe and in this country, with a view to their adoption on certain small rivers in the district under his charge. The investigation resulted in the accumulation of a great amount of material from widely scattered sources, in treatises, reports, pamphlets, magazine and newspaper articles, etc., and valuable information from actual observation of the dams in use on the Ohio and Great Kanawha Rivers.
