Design of Stormwater Structures with Special Regard to Sedimentation Processes
Within the past decades substantial progress has been achieved in wastewater management at sewage treatment plants. At the same time the significance of the pollution loads emitted from catchment areas has considerably increased. In order to reduce these pollution loads, different types of stormwater structures are installed within combined sewer systems. While in the beginning of combined sewerage, stormwater overflows were installed; nowadays different types of structures are used for stormwater treatment. In particular the number of `Stormwater Tanks' and `Sewers with Storage Capacity' is increasing. By these means a decrease of the pollution loads emitted from catchment areas shall be obtained. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about different processes and thus the efficiency of these structures. In the following a new concept for the evaluation of all relevant processes occurring in stormwater structures will be presented. By means of this concept the efficiency of stormwater structures will be illustrated on the basis of results of pilot-scale and full-scale investigations. Derived from these results, a new concept for the future design of stormwater structures will be exemplified. Furthermore the possibility of enhanced retention of pollution load by the implementation of lamella separators will be discussed.
