Impact of Anthropogenic Modifications along Rivers and Shorelines during the March 11, 2011, Tohoku Earthquake
The 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Mw = 9.0) caused widespread damage in the Kanto region of Japan. Along rivers and coastal shorelines (including Tokyo Bay), soil liquefaction, lateral spreading, and seismically induced settlements contributed significantly to the reported damages. In April 2011, the author visited affected areas in the Kanto region and found that much of the observed damage in the Kanto region was associated with human modifications that resulted: in levees constructed over paleochannels, in bridges as well as cities constructed in areas where swamps and old river beds were once present, and in buildings constructed over hydraulic or poorly compacted fill.
