Recycling and socioeconomic aspects of collectors of solid waste landfill Ilheus, Bahia
Management of Municipal Solid Waste in Ilhéus has gone through a series of interventions involving physical readjustment and management of the landfill, encompassing social inclusion of waste pickers, implementation of selective collection and social mobilization. The objective of the research was to analyze the recycling chain and the social and economic aspects of waste pickers who work within the landfill Islanders. The research involved the use of semi-structured questionnaire to 40 pickers, and document analysis. With the data obtained, we conclude that the scavengers who work at the landfill, even with the social inclusion process started in 2008, supported by state and local agencies also played in the year 2012 their activities informally, individually and without physical and functional structure. The recycling market Ilhéus stops generating 90% of revenue that municipal solid waste can provide therefore informal, the collectors collect only 10% of the total subject to recycling. According to the data analyzed, the monthly revenue generated for each collector on average was R $ 390.00 in 2012, equivalent to 62% of the minimum wage. This value allows only minimize the pressures generated mainly by the lack of better job opportunities. Therefore, the absence of an effective program of selective collection, the municipality of Ilhéus leaves provide revenue to social inclusion, and reduce environmental impacts caused by improper disposal of solid waste.
