Dust suppression and real-time aerosol monitor in highway construction work zones
Highway construction and rehabilitation is an essential activity for the convenience of commuters but involves emission of particulate matter with various aerodynamics parameters. The characterization of particulate matter is influenced by the intensity, the nature of the ongoing construction activities, meteorological conditions, including temperature, humidity, and wind speed at the construction site. Construction activities like movement of diesel powered construction machineries accessing and traveling across the site, hauling of dirt during cut and fill, saw cutting, core drilling, milling, compaction, demolition, etc., contribute to generating visible dust plumes and deposits. Aerosols thus produced have an adverse effect on the health of construction workers, nearby communities and provoke the natural state of the environment. The study in the thesis presents a real-time air monitoring data on the highway construction work zone at different phases of construction and shows findings as a basis for improving the existing methodology to suppress particulate matter emission.
