IRIS Fire Spread Forecasts - Fire Season 2019 - Greece
Named under a messenger goddess of the Greek mythology, IRIS is a rapid-response fire spread forecasting system that was developed at the National Observatory of Athens, Greece, with the aim to support to the operational firefighting activities of the Hellenic Fire Corps. The system is based on an advanced coupled fire-atmosphere modelling system and is able to provide ultra-high-resolution (100 x 100 m2) 24 h fire spread forecasts in less than 60 minutes following its activation (Giannaros et al., 2019). IRIS was pre-operationally deployed and calibrated during the 2018 fire season in Greece (Giannaros et al., 2019). During the 2019 fire season, the system was operationally deployed and provided fire spread forecast guidance for 17 wildfire events in total. This repository provides open access to the Google Earth KMZ files of the 24 h fire spread forecasts produced by IRIS during the 2019 fire season. Out of the total 17 wildfires for which IRIS was activated, data are provided for the 8 most significant events (see list below). For these events, the ignition locations and the final fire perimeters, retrieved from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS; https://effis.jrc.ec.europa.eu) based on MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Terra and Aqua satellite remote sensing data, are also provided. 2019 wildfires (ID: region, date, total burnt area): 012019: Kastri (Phthiotis), 08/07/2019, 98 ha 042019: Elafonissos (Laconia), 10/08/2019, 535 ha 062019: Ymittos (Attica), 12/08/2019, 180 ha 072019: Makrimalli (Euboea), 13/08/2019, 2,889 ha 082019: Prodromos (Boetia), 13/08/2019, 735 ha 112019: Mesokampos (Samos), 24/08/2019, 59 ha 152019: Loutraki (Corinthia), 14/09/2019, 352 ha 162019: Lithakia (Zakynthos), 15/09/2019, 919 ha Details: File format: Google Earth KMZ Coordinate system: World Geodetic System 1984 (also known as WGS 1984, EPSG:4326) Longitude range: N/A Latitude range: N/A Temporal resolution: 24 hours Spatial resolution: 100 m Spatial coverage: Greece Time span: May 1 to October 31 2019.
