EXPERMENTAL STUDY ON LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE BY PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF NORMAL COARSE AGGREGATE WITH PUMICE AGGREGATE
Concrete is very important material for different infrastructure due to its mechanical and chemical properties. The material cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water gives possible advantage to get different mix design. As the construction of concrete work in high rise building and different infrastructure increasing enormously in the developing countries, the overall weight of the structure has become a major challenge. Therefore there is a need to reduce the overall weight by replacing the coarse aggregate with available resource like light weight pumice coarse aggregate (especially in Ethiopia) as response to this challenge. The experiment work is aimed for the mix design of C-25 concrete by the partial replacement of normal coarse aggregate with pumice aggregate by 30%, 50%, 70% and 100% by weight. Material tests such as loss Angeles abrasion, aggregate crushing value, absorption and specific gravity were conducted on pumice aggregate to know its suitability. Slump test was conducted for Fresh concrete and also the weight loss & compressive strength was determined for the hardened concrete at all replacement levels. Cube specimens of size 150*150*150mm size, were cast and tested at 7 and 28 days of curing age. The properties of pumice concrete were compared with normal concrete (concrete without replacement) to attain the optimum percentage replacement. The weight reduced & increase in percentage replacement. Result 30% and 50% pumice replacement proportion 26.7 N/mm2 and 19.5 N/mm2 respectively shows lightweight concrete satisfies ACI 213R- 03 standards 1120-1920 kg/m3with compressive strength not less than 17mpa for c-25 concrete class at 28-days curing age.
