Sawdust for Thermal Insulation Building
Abstract. Air conditioners (AC) are used in almost all building in tropical country like Indonesia. Finding materials to reduce the rate of heat flow from outside building is very important in order to save electric power for AC. Meanwhile there are a lot of wastes sawdust from sawmills in Indonesia which are usually burned. This paper studied waste sawdust for thermal insulation building. The thermal conductivity and mechanical property of sawdust-board formed by sawdust and resin (polyester) have been measured. Our measurements show that the thermal conductivities of sawdust-board pressed by 90 ton are k=0.059 W/m oC (100% sawdust : 0% resin) and k=0.054 W/m oC (0% sawdust : 100% resin). It is quite surprised, when sawdust-board formed by sawdust (50%) and resin (50%) pressed by 90 ton, its thermal conductivity become lower to k=0.022 W/m oC. For this condition, the mechanical properties of sawdust-board are found to be 0.43 Kgf/mm2 (tensile strength), 4.24% (elongation), 4.36 Kgf/mm2 (bending strength). This “new material” can be used for thermal insulation building to reduce rate of heat flow from outside building significantly. Keywords: Thermal Conductivity; Thermal Insulation; Sawdust-board.
