A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Greek-German workshop management of municipal-waste : proceedings Thessaloniki October 1994
The management of municipal solid waste is one of the most severe and challenging problems of modern society, especially for technologically developed countries. The difficulty in solving this problem consists mainly in its dependence on several interacting parameters. Specifically, waste management is related to $\bullet$ economical issues (example: the relation between costs for waste disposal and benefits from the possible recovery of raw materials through a recycling programme), $\bullet$ energetical issues (for instance, how do the energy demands for waste transport, treatment and disposal compare with the possible gain from thermal conversion) and $\bullet$ environmental issues (air, water and/or soil pollution depending on the method adopted for the disposal of solid waste). Several topics related to the management of municipal solid waste were the subject of a Workshop held on 7 October 1994 at the School ofEngineering of the Aristotle University Thessaloniki in the frame of the German-Greek Bilateral Scientific Cooperation. Distinguished experts from Germany and Greece described the current situation with regard to municipal waste management in the two countries and identified possibilities for noticeable improvements which might be achieved by the aid of new technological developments. Moreover, discussions were initiated aiming to establish new joint research activities which might easily form a new integrated project on Waste Management within the Bilateral Cooperation. The present volume comprises the papers given at the above Workshop and thus it reflects to a large extent the current situation of municipal solid waste in Germany and Greece. On behalf of the editorial team I would like to thank the authors for their excellent job which was completed in a relatively short time. I also wish to acknowledge the support provided by the International Bureau of the KFA Jülich for printing the proceedings.
