Mechanical Characterization of Concrete at High Strain-rate by a Modified Hopkinson Bar: a Tool in Blast and Impact Structural Assessment and Design
During their lifetime, concrete structures may be subjected to several accidental loads, such as impacts and blasts, which induce different high strain-rates in the material, typically from ~0.01/sec for earthquakes to ~100/sec for very strong explosions. Concrete is also used in protective structures. However, despite its many applications, the knowledge with regards to concrete behaviour at high strain rate is still incomplete mainly due to the difficulty in the realization of appropriate tests. For this reason large experimental campaigns on concrete subjected to dynamic loads have been conceived and developed in the last ten years. In the following some results are summarized obtained at the Joint Research Centre – Ispra, where several programs have been developed in order to produce new data on some basic subjects of industrial importance Among them are: the influence of the increasing aggregate size; the influence of the specimen size and the influence of the relative humidity and so on, both in tension and compression. ; JRC.G.5-European laboratory for structural assessment
