Syftet med detta arbete är att kunna ge Alnarpsfakulteten och Akademiska Hus ett genomtänkt förslag som visar hur Alnarpslunden kan styras och formas framöver utifrån olika överväganden. Hur ska vi tackla situationen med almarnas snabba reträtt från Alnarpslunden? Arbetet bygger dels på ett antal Alnarpsexperters tankar om lunden och dess framtid och dels på mina egna studier av lundinriktad litteratur, äldre Alnarpsbeskrivningar och av Alnarpslundens nuvarande uppbyggnad, status och framtidspotential. Arbetet består av tre delar: Del 1 Några huvuddrag ur Alnarpslundens historia Första delen delar i sin tur in Alnarpslundens historia i fyra skeden från islossning till nutid. Skede 1 Från inlandsis till bosättning Marken koloniseras av träd och växter för att tusentals år senare glesas ut av både människan och stora gräsätare. Skede 2 Från den första gårdsetableringen till tiden som svensk kungsgård Så småningom ingick troligen den nuvarande lunden i ett halvöppet skogs- och beteslandskap. Tack vare att Alnarps skog har legat på mäktiga mäns ägor har den skonats från systematisk skövling. Skogens uppgift var att försörja de närbelägna byarna med ved och virke. Skede 3 Från Lantbruksinstitutet till Lantbruksuniversitet I och med Alnarps landtbruksinstituts grundande urholkades skogen till en omkringliggande och skyddande krans till parken som kom att anläggas här. Skede 4 Alnarp som "landskapslaboratorium" De sista 30 åren har ytan trädbeklädd mark på Alnarp vuxit och lunden kan ses som en viktig komponent med lång träd- skogs- och örtkontinuitet till Alnarps landskapslaboratorium. Del 2 Alnarpslunden idag Del två beskriver lundens användning ur olika perspektiv både inom och utom SLUs verksamhet. Dels beskrivs dess uppbyggnad, dynamik och arter och dels beskrivs vilka viktiga värden lunden står för. Del 3 Alnarpslunden och framtiden I sista delen kommer jag med ett tänkbart utvecklingsförslag som på inga sätt är det perfekta och enda förslaget. Med anledning av almsjukans urgallring av stora almar som stomme i trädbeståndet bör man ta tillfället i akt och utnyttja situationen. Det är ett ypperligt tillfälle att dels gå in och prova olika typer av skötselåtgärder med olika intensitet och dels prova etablering av exoter i en redan etablerad mellaneuropeisk skogstyp. Med vidtagna åtgärder ska man både kunna utveckla och bevara lundkarktären och kunna jämföra utvecklingen med bestånden i främst Tor Nitzelius park där samma arter finns. Tanken är att arbetet skall inspirera till att man här på Alnarp tar tag i situationen och upprättar en utvecklingsplan. Samarbete över institutionsgränserna önskas i större utsträckning än tidigare för att få en sådan plan till stånd. Det är en värdefull miljö vi arbetar och studerar i. Den ska vi vara rädd om. ; The purpose of this thesis is to give Alnarpsfakulteten and Akademiska Hus a well thought out proposal that shows what design and development possibilities the Alnarp grove holds for the future based on a few considerations. How should we deal with the situation caused by the fast disappearance of the elms from the Alnarp grove? The work is partly based on a few experts from Alnarp and their thoughts and ideas about the grove and its future, and partly based on my own studies of literature on groves, older descriptions of Alnarp as well as the present shape, status and potential for the future. The work contains three parts: Part 1 A few main features from the history of the Alnarp grove The first part divides the history of The Alnarp grove into four stages from the end of the most recent ice age to present day. Stage 1 From ice age to settlement The land is being colonized by trees and plants. The established vegetation will over time be decimated by both man and large grazers. Stage 2 From the first establishment to the time as a Swedish demesne of the Crown At some point the grove probably was apart of a semi open forest- and pasture landscape. Due to the fact that the Alnarp forest always has been located on powerful men’s properties it has been protected from systematic devastation. The forests purpose was to supply the neighbouring villages with firewood and timber. Stage 3 From agricultural institute to agricultural university At the time when the agricultural institute was founded the forest was hollowed out to a surround- ABSTRACT ing and protecting ring to the park that was to be founded here. Stage 4 Alnarp as a “landscape laboratory” The last 30 years the surface of tree covered land on Alnarp has grown and the grove can be seen as an important component with a long continuity of trees, forest and herbs to the landscape laboratory. Part 2 The Alnarp grove today Part two describes the usage of the grove from different perspective both within and outside the activity of SLU. Partly it describes its shape, dynamics and species and partly it describes the important values the grove represents. Part 3 The Alnarp grove and the future In the last part I propose a possible developing strategy for the grove. Due to the Dutch elm disease, and the following thinning of large elms that have been a frame work in the tree stand, a good opportunity has arised to implement some changes. It is an excellent time to go in and try out different kinds of maintenance actions with varying intensity and to some extent try to establish different kinds of exotic plants in an already full grown central european forest. With certain measures taken, one should be able to both develop and keep the grove character and compare the progress of the tree stand with the stand in Tor Nitzelius park, that has a forest of similar specie composition. My aim with this thesis is to inspire people in charge here at Alnarp to deal with the situation and create a developing plan. More cooperation between institutions is necessary, to make that a reality. It is a valuable environment we are working and studying in. We must take care of it.
