Garden cities in 21st century Scandinavia : a design proposal
Partille, a municipality just east of Gothenburg, Sweden, is growing. To meet an increasing need for housing, the municipality has developed a plan proposal consisting of development proposals, recreational areas and traffic measures. The area subject to this degree project is located at the location of a former market garden and is suggested to be built as a garden city. The purpose of this study is to investigate the garden city ideal and its principles, and to evaluate their application and feasibility corresponding to the conditions of this particular site. The project is conducted as a literature study, completed with an interview with representatives of the municipality. The garden city concept has shown hard to dissect. It has aliving definition that has changed over time and in different countries and contexts. Originally, the garden city was an idea of social reform, addressing the poor living conditions of post-industrial London. As society has evolved since early 20th century, so has the meaning of the term garden city. Not least in Sweden, where the garden city is characterised by its morphological features, rather than its strategic or societal. In Sweden, the garden city has come to be characterised by physical design elements and the organisation of them. In short, the most prominent features are low buildings, moderate density, diversity and traditional streets, squares and places. Despite the sprawling definition of the concept, the following principles can be distinguished from the literature: • Holistic view. • Homes of mixed tenure and genuinely affordablehousing types. • Beautifully and creatively designed homes withgardens with opportunity to grow food. • Marrying town and country. • Development that enhances the natural environmentand provides a comprehensive green infrastructureand variation according to geography. • Walkable, vibrant and sociable neighbourhoods withstrong cultural, recreational and commercialactivities. • Transport systems that are integrated and accessiblewith emphasis ...
