Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Urban Sprawl and Development of Model Using Geospatial and Open Source Tools
The process of urbanization and population growth needs to be monitored regularly. Generally Town Planners prepare the Master Plan or Development Plan for the future development of the towns. They plan for the future by estimating the population projection and based on which the land use, infrastructure, amenities and facilities. Khammam town in Andhra Pradesh is a fast growing urban centre. It has a Population of 1, 84,252 (2011) and a Planning Area of 34.50 sq. kms. With the rapid increase in population the urbanization is also spreading onto the neighboring rural areas. So, urbanization and changes in urban sprawl, land use, population growth and other aspects require periodic monitoring from time to time. The present work concentrates on some of the views mentioned above. Here, Remote Sensing, GIS, .NET and Open Source Tools and Technology are used to address the objective of the study. The results of the study indicate that the urban sprawl of Khammam town was 15 sq. kms. in the year 2011 and a population of1,84,252 in 2011. The population projected for the year 2031 using Parabolic Method is around 2,19,731. The number of houses for the year 2011 was 40,054 and the demand for the number of houses projected for the year 2031 is around 47,767. The “Housing Demand Module†developed for the Khammam Town can be of immense help for taking care of future Housing Demand as part of Urban Planning requirements by the Khammam Municipality.
