Anaerobic digestion and the markets for resource recovery
Anaerobic digestion (AD) entered in the domain of environmental technology as an elegant way to decrease oxygen demand in the treatment of putrescible organics and to stabilize residual organics into a type of ‘humus’. It was initially not regarded as a way to recover energy or valuable materials. It was an end of pipe treatment not entailing excessive cost. At present, in the context of the cyclic economy and the need to come to resource recycling as driven by the need to abate climate change, AD has become a gateway to develop markets for recovery of energy, organics, sulphur, metals, phosphorous, water and recently also nitrogen. Particularly the latter is new and deserves a critical assessment. Yet, resource recovery also means dimensions of scale and effective demand by the normal market economy. The question how AD ties in with the latter is of specific interest.
