EFFECT OF FINENESS OF SUGARCANE BAGASSE ASH ON MECHANICAL PROPERTY OF CONCRETE
Sugarcane bagasse ash is a byproduct of the sugar factories found after burning sugarcane bagasse. The disposal of this material is already causing environmental problems around the sugar factories. In addition to that due to the boost of the construction activity in the country, a huge shortage is created in most of the construction materials especially cement, resulting in steady increase of price. Therefore the objective of this study is to examine the fineness of bagasse ash in concrete production using different percentage. Initially, bagasse ash samples were collected from Metehara sugar factory and its chemical properties were investigated. The range of application of using bagasse ash as a partial replacement for Ordinary Portland cement for concrete production has been experimentally investigated from the perspective of strength, fineness and workability of concrete. Strength of concrete was investigated at 7th and 28th day of the concrete. Systematic experiments were conducted for Bagasse ash retain at 45μm,75μm,150μm sieve size with replacement ratios of 0%, 5%, 10%,15% and 20% of ordinary Portland cement were prepared for 25MPa at constant water to cement ratio The properties of these mixes have then been assessed both at the fresh and hardened state. In the experimental result, a strength enhancement was observed in concrete mixes made with bagasse ash. This enhancement was seen in concrete mixes that were prepared with bagasse ash at all sieve size with amount up to 10% replacement by volume. Moreover, Bagasse ash retains at 45 μm sieve size showed better result than others sieve size. Thus it can be said that decreasing the sieve size can improve the property of concrete It can therefore be concluded that up to 10% replacement of cement by bagasse ash results increase in strength and higher replacement could also be used with a slight reduction in the performance of the concrete.
