ASSESSMENT OF WASTE STABILIZATION POND ON GEOMEMBRANE LINER UPLIFT PROBLEM (CASE STUDY ON KITO FURDISA CAMPUS AT JIMMA UNIVERSITY
The independent project focused on wastewater stabilization pond, which is large shallow basins in which raw sewage is treated entirely by the natural process involving both algae and bacteria. It is low-cost, low-maintenance, highly efficient, entirely natural and highly sustainable with only direct solar energy usage. It requires much more land than conventional electromechanical treatment processes such as activated sludge. The primary objective of this paper is to analyse and evaluate the waste stabilization pondof Jimma University Kito Furdisa campus that encoumtered the geomembrane (HDPE) liner material bulging and uplifting. Different reasons can cause the effect of swelling includes accumulated water due to migration of ground water through walls and floor of ponds, accumulated water due to runoff creeping under the liner and through surrounding walkways due to rain, and formation of gas and puncture of the liner, etc. The uplift problem of the geomembrane liner could have been mitigated or avoided through the proper design, construction, and operation. Specifically this type of material need attention during installation. The geosynthetic liner must be anchored, all welded joints and seals must be watertight, geomembranes must be free of blisters and contaminants, It must be laid according to the manufacturer’s specifications, Venting infrastructure may be necessary depending on site and particular pond characteristics
