Fostering change : exploring student perceptions and motivations for sustainable transformation in textile engineering
Textiles play a fundamental role in daily life. While contributing significantly to the global economy, it has also acquired negative attention for its environment implications. Fostering sustainable practices within the industry, at a foundational level is now imperative for a fundamental shift. While many studies explore consumer behaviour and purchasing patterns, the existing literature on sustainability education reveals a prominent dearth of research focused on the perceptions and motivations of textile engineering students. This study addresses a gap in the existing literature by exploring factors shaping students' engagement with sustainability in the textile sector. The research establishes a robust foundation through a comprehensive literature review and background on sustainability education. Subsequently, interviews with textile engineering students at Tampere University of Applied Sciences were conducted to assess their knowledge of sustainability-related topics. The findings illuminate the perceptions and motivations of these students, providing valuable insights for promoting sustainability within the textile industry through the implementation of an effective curriculum. It was concluded that the students not only had awareness about the topic but also had strong motivations to have sustainability embedded throughout their curriculum as well as uncover some specific facets that were of interest to them.
