Back to the sources. Manfredo Tafuri, Emilio Garroni and Teorie e storia dell’architettura
A historiographic reconstruction of the thought of Manfredo Tafuri (1935-1994) must inevitably find compensatory strategies to overcome the main difficulty posed by the matter of study, that of the sources. And besides, unless specific exceptions, in his books Tafuri has never included bibliographies. This contribution intends to present the first results of a philological analysis conducted on a key book for Tafuri himself and the debate of the time, Teorie e storia dell’architettura (1968), closely compared with its second Italian edition (1970). This first step led to detect the extent to which Tafuri intervened on book’s re-editions and to recognize his subsequent attempts of a political re-contextualization of the book. The systematic filing of 1968 bibliography, together with the mid-1960s critical course bibliographies and lecture recordings, then allowed to give due weight to references hitherto unknown. The analysis situates Teorie e storia in 1960s artistic and architectural discourse and offers a new perspective on the author and his book. It particularly brings to light the underlying conversation with Emilio Garroni’book La crisi semantica delle arti (1964), a source that fits precisely a generational urgency, that of architecture and its meaning, on which Tafuri will constantly return. In Teorie e storia, in fact, Tafuri exposes himself in an explicit struggle in defense of the meaning of architecture other than its internal laws, although he no longer says which ones. The reading is intertwined with a parallel narration through the illustrations replaced by Tafuri for the second edition of Teorie e storia.
