Thrown into the Abyss of No-Place : Narratives of Hybridity among Second-Generation "Iranian Swedes"
This thesis explores the complexities of identity formation among second-generation "Iranian Swedes", emphasizing the fluidity, multiplicity, and ambivalence inherent in their narratives of identity. Grounded in a postmodern, social constructionist framework, the study employs narrative inquiry to delve into the personal stories of individuals like Sara and Shima, who navigate the intersections of Iranian heritage and Swedish society. By rejecting traditional assimilation models and critically engaging with concepts like transnationalism and hybridity, the research highlights how these individuals resist rigid categorizations and negotiate their identities in a continuous, unfinished process of becoming. Through in-depth interviews and participant observations, the thesis uncovers how the second-generation construct their identities not as fixed essences, but as dynamic, context-dependent performances influenced by social interactions, cultural discourses, and historical contexts. The narratives reveal experiences of exclusion, marginalization, and the subtle forms of racism that challenge their sense of belonging in both Swedish and Iranian contexts. The study also examines how they form transethnic connections and solidarities, creating new spaces of community that transcend traditional ethnic boundaries. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of identity as an ongoing negotiation shaped by tensions between belonging and exclusion, heritage, and present realities. The thesis invites readers to engage with these stories in a way that honors their complexity and uncertainty, embracing the in-between spaces where identities are continually constructed and reconstructed. It underscores the need to move beyond essentialist frameworks to appreciate the fragmented, fluid nature of identity in the context of globalization and migration.
