30th urban design and implementations symposium: 5th international urban design and implementations: congress future of urban design + urban design of future : proceedings ; Kentsel Tasarım ve Uygulamalar Sempozyumu (30. : 2022 : İstanbul, Türkiye)
INTRODUCTION We are glad that Urban Design and Implementation Symposium has reached its 30th anniversary in 2022. In this respect, it has been held as an international congress. It was the 5th international organization in the symposium’s history. Cities are facing a global crisis all over the world that has several aspects: Climate change that threaten balance of the nature, increasing socio-economic inequalities that jeopardize social cohesion, untransparent decision making that turn down the citizens’ voice. All have crucial impacts on cities and urban life. More than the half of the World’s population is living in urbanized areas which bring global urban problems into the forefront. Scientists have been repeatedly warning politicians, decision makers and citizens all over World about these near future global problems for decades. Urban design is one of the crucial professions which has to do with to stop and reverse the worsening impacts of the global problems. Hereby, we decided the theme of the symposium as “The Future of Urban Design + Urban Design of Future”. We believe that urban design as a field of spatial science can contribute to overcome the challenging future of cities, and to do so it should reinvent itself according to the problems that cities are faced. Urban design is an evolving field of science since it has born. Once it was seen as an artistic phase of urban planning with the contribution of urban planning, architecture, and landscape architecture, seventy years ago, now it is widely accepted as a part of urban planning process that includes interdisciplinary approaches, collective and participatory decision making, and implementation of public policies. 30th Urban Design and Implementation Symposium attracted a great attention not only in Turkey but also in Europe.
