THE CHALLENGES AND BENEFITS OF PRIVATELY OWNED CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES INCORPORATED AS SHARE COMPANY IN ETHIOPIA
Construction industry has complexity in its nature because it contains large number of parties as clients, contractors, consultants, stakeholders, shareholders, regulatory bodies and others. In Ethiopia the number of construction projects is increasing from time to time. The strategic importance of construction project as an economic facility or developmental process and its investment potential are some attributes that attract all sectors of the economy to its projecting rays. Construction project is like a catalyst that not only serve as an engine that energies every other sector of the economy, but, gives impetus to the developmental rating of the our nation. However, due to certain challenges like weak project management capability, fragmented and weak construction company, poor technology, weak financial strength and low performance lead our national construction companies not to compute with foreign construction companies. Thus the main aim of this study is to assess the challenges and benefits of corporate construction share companies in Ethiopia particularly focusing Filintstone and HACOMAL. To make analysis the study used descriptive survey design and distributed 65 structured questionnaires to the staff of both companies. Based on the data collected descriptive indexes like frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviations were calculated and ranked according to their degree of agreements. According to the analysis the following challenges were identified as research findings such as shortage of financial resources, difficulty to get bank loan, lack of transparency and accountability in construction companies. Among the benefits and advantages working as corporate share company are: it will enhance the financial capability of companies; it will give a comparative collective strength over rivals; it will enable the business to run even though the owners die; it will enable government to control their finance and will create a conducive working environment for employees. Based on the finding the following issues are recommended: the private construction sector and the government should promote corporate construction share companies; the existing private construction share companies should follow up to date project management system, create transparent and accountable working policy; the management should strictly follow and act according to the policies issued by the companies.
