ASSESSEMENT OF THE CURRENT STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT PRACTICES OF GRADE-I GENERAL CONTRACTORS IN ADDIS ABABA
More than other industries, the contemporary construction industry is operating in a dynamic environment which is full of risks and uncertainties. As a result, it has been observed that most contracting firms fail to gain, retain and sustain their competitive advantage with which they can survive as a business firm in the industry. In relation to this fact, a number of professionals, researchers and practitioners advise that in such ambiguous and unstable environment it is better to practices strategic management rather than sticking to traditional management. With this regard, this research is aimed to evaluate the current level of strategic management practices of General Contractors in Addis Ababa with specific objectives of investigating the challenges facing them in implementing their business strategy as well as the methods to tackle these challenges. A descriptive design with mixed approach was used to collect and analyze necessary data. Relevant quantitative data was collected via questionnaire from 41 first grade General Contractors. At the same time, in addition to archival review, qualitative data was collected via case study survey from two General Contractors and also through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) from representative members of General Contractors. A subsequent descriptive analysis was conducted for quantitative data using a statistical tool SPSS and text (thematic) analysis for qualitative data. These multi-evidence results of the analyses were triangulated which reveals that the level of strategic management practices of the contracting firms under study falls within ad hoc and reactive levels. Furthermore, the major challenges that face them in strategy implementation are weak commitment of top management, poor communication, superficial organizational culture, unorganized financial resource and management, incompetent skill and immature information technology are among the major ones whereas the possible methods to confront the challenges are establishing effective communication, permitting open innovation, appreciating change management and aligning company strategy with operating environment.
