Does sustainability matter? Sustainability certifications and consumer booking behaviour - Case: Loviisa Camping
Sustainability is going mainstream - but how can each one of us contribute? One possibility to do so is by supporting companies that are making environmental efforts and one easy way to identify such companies are sustainability certifications. This thesis researches how sustainability influences the booking behaviour of Loviisa Camping’s customers. The goal is to scour the sustainability certification jungle, evaluate what existing sustainability certification is suitable for Loviisa Camping and what are the benefits of applying for such a sustainability certification. The approach to theory development in this research is inductive. The methodological choice is quantitative and the related data is collected through a survey in a cross-sectional time frame. The case company for this case study is Loviisa Camping. Sustainability certifications offer guidelines and measures on sustainability, which do result in lower operational costs and improved customer satisfaction. The use of a sustainability logo turns out to be a marketing advantage for the awarded accommodation providers. The reduction in use of resources (less water, energy, waste) and the usage of local products (less transportation) has as well a direct positive impact on the environment. The results of the survey show that sustainable efforts, environmental consciousness, green activities and services do matter to travellers, but in the end, it seems not so very important to them what sustainability certification an accommodation provider has, if any. That said, there are sustainability certifications which are more recognizable and trusted than others, and which are therefore preferable. The suggestion to Loviisa Camping is to choose – depending on their priorities and goals - between two sustainability certifications, which are the EU Ecolabel and the Green Key.
