Effect of municipal solid waste incinerated (MSWI) residues on the properties of clay bricks
Abstract. In this thesis, the use of municipal solid waste incinerated bottom ash (MSWI BA) as partial replacement of two types of clay minerals (London and Finnish) was formulated and their effect on the properties of the bricks were investigated. The effect of varying substitutions of clay by MSWI BA (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) and firing at 1000 ℃ were investigated via compressive strength, mass loss, shrinkage, apparent density, water absorption, permeable porosity, sorptivity, freeze — thaw resistance, thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and leaching of heavy metals. Overall results show that addition of 30% MSWI BA with London clay and 20% MSWI BA with Finnish clay has a positive impact on the mechanical and durability of the samples. Findings from this study revealed that replacing clay with MSWI BA provides a better opportunity to reduce the environmental impact from waste products. This research aims to contribute to sustainable construction practices and effective waste management by exploring the potential of MSWI residues in brick production.
