Symbol, Myth & Truth: Framing the Architecture(s) of Black Metal - A Spatial Exploration of Subculture
As ancient forms of human creativity, both architecture and music shape and mirror the cultural landscapes surrounding them. Why is it then, that architecture fails to engage in the same way music does, or any other applied art for that sake? As it stands now, the subject of “architecture” remains defined by a homogenous, narrow group of people. If an artform is to remain relevant, it’s definitions and expressions need to be informed by the cultures surrounding it. This speculative research project proposes a method of investigation applicable to all subcultures, exploring the relationship between (un) popular cultures and the architectures surrounding them, aiming to inform and expand our perception of architecture and style.
