The South of the South : Use of monuments by the dictatorial regimes of the Southern Cone of South America
During the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century, the countries of the Southern Cone went through authoritarian governments with significant parallelisms. In this context, cultural heritage was used to increase andpromote acceptance among the population. Monuments, as part of that utilised heritage, constituted land markers intended to change both the physical and the mental landscapes. The questioning of monumental heritage has taken on particular relevance and effervescence in recent years inthe framework of political movements and activism that oppose racism, colonialism and discrimination. The heritage generated during the last military dictatorships has also been contested in the Southern Cone region. This study approaches the uses of monumental heritage during these dictatorships, focusing on the roles played by monuments as tools used by the regimes to create subjectivities, narratives and societies aligned with the values that guided these authoritarian governments. A sample of six cases was defined, and edicts, laws and decrees, published materials (book chapters and papers), and publications in the media and official publications related to the cases were identified. Documentary analysis was performed on the collected documentation. In addition, consultations were made to institutions related to cultural heritage or with organisations that have arole in the custody or protection of the selected monuments. The research allowed us to identify a series of values used to create narratives related to the authoritarian regimes of the Southern Cone; this series of values were used when performing the analysis. The results suggest that monumentalization was intensely used by the authoritarian regimes of the Southern Cone, with monuments reflecting the set of values that were identified. These values promoted the acceptance of the regimes. The re-foundational processes pursued by the three dictatorships presented strong parallelisms, which was reflected in the construction of a common narrative, that ...
