Earthquake Risk Assessment of Historical Structures ; Bewertung des Erdbebenrisikos von historischen Bauwerken
In this work, the full risk assessment chain for historical masonry churches is covered. After a definition of the major components of risk management and introductory remarks about different types of risks and their description, research addresses the tasks of hazard assessment, vulnerability assessment, damage description, estimation of losses and the comparison of risks. In the first step, the correlation of different earthquake intensity parameters with the structural damage is analysed. The results are used to determine the occurrence probabilities of significant earthquake characteristics. Based on the macroelement approach, the structural vulnerability is then assessed. A detailed study concerning the influence of load and material parameters and their influence on the damage occurrence using nonlinear dynamic simulations is performed. In the next step, the continuous numerical results are connected to the discrete damage grades defined in the European Macroseismic Scale. This link enables the prediction of possible losses, which are derived from a larger data collection. According to the database, risk classes and importance factors are obtained, which can be used to compare the risk of similar structures. Finally, the thesis concludes with a first proposal to include losses of cultural, social and historical values in the risk assessment. By this method, it is possible to compare the earthquake risk of historical structure to diverse kinds of other risks, such as sport or health risks. The method enables engineers to describe possible losses of extreme events, helps to determine priorities in reinforcing churches and offers guidelines for decision makers to focus financial investments.
