Sąsajos tarp alkoholio pardavimo vietų tankio, jo vartojimo viešose vietose ir socialinės žalos Vilniaus, Kauno ir Klaipėdos skirtingo tipo mikrorajonuose ; Relationship between alcohol outlet density, public alcohol consumption and social harm
There is almost no research about the relationship between alcohol outlet density, its consumption in public spaces and crime or other social harm in Lithuania. Thus, this article analyses links between alcohol outlet density, its consumption in public spaces and social harm in different areas of major Lithuanian cities. It is based on the area related alcohol availability and theoretical framework of social harm. According to the area sampling, four area clusters were chosen in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda cities: the old town, the working class area, the area of Soviet blocks of flats and suburban zone. A qualitative survey was conducted during which 1872 respondents were interviewed. In analysing the data, factor analysis, comparison of independent samples means and linear regression were applied. The data analysis enables us to conclude that alcohol availability and social harm rates are the lowest in the cities’ suburban areas compared to other spaces (p<0.05). Alcohol outlet density is the highest in the old town area (p<0,05). The social harm is significantly higher in the old town, working class and Soviet block of flats areas compared to the suburban area (p<0.05). Linear regression results reveal that alcohol outlet density and alcohol public consumption had a direct positive effect and is a predictor of social harm in different areas of the cities. The reduction of alcohol outlet density, prohibition of public alcohol consumption nearby alcohol selling places, in the parks or other public spaces should be the main tools in preventing social harm in the Lithuanian cities.
