A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Kauno Savanorių prospekto atnaujinimo perspektyvos miestovaizdžio kontekste ; Perspectives of Kaunas Savanoriai Avenue renovation in the context of the cityscape
The city is a special creation of civilization, constantly changing socio-cultural and urban fabric. The street is an important linear dominant of a city, which ensures its social and economic vitality. Savanorių Avenue is probably the straightest t and longest artery shaping the image of Kaunas, which is filled with unused spaces and functionally unreasonable areas, therefore the problem of its visual identity is important in the formation of the cityscape. For this reason, it is important to determine the quality of the avenue's further refurbishment in order to give the cityscape a new quality level as one of the major metropolitan urban axes; to become an attractive counterweight to the city center. The thesis raises the hypothesis: whether the cityscape of Kaunas would be enriched by creating affluent areas in the linear axis of Savanorių Ave. and expanding economic, socio-cultural, ecological, recreational and aesthetic areas of activity? The research work analyzes the historical circumstances of the city development of Savanorių Avenue from its origins in 1836 to this day, summing up the peculiarities and highlighting the valuable qualities. Stages of historical development, significant events in and around the street axis during that period are systematized and reviewed. The revelation of correlation between the multidimensionality of the concept of the cityscape and its derivations, examination of the fundamental theories of the formation and formation of cities revealed the main features of the perfect city and revealed the guidelines of this aspiration. Having reviewed the relation of the concept of the cityscape and its derivatives to the models of the formation of the city, two most suitable models of the city system for the analysis of Savanorių Avenue were selected. The architectural, spatial and aesthetic potential of renewal of Savanorių Avenue has been revealed by the theory of Kevin A. Lynch, which has best refined the elements of the city system. Applying the phenomenon of the urban interaction system according to Michael Decler's concept, the artery was evaluated in ecological, economic, sociocultural terms. The feasibility study develops and discusses ideas for the successful refurbishment of Savanorių Avenue, as the main axis of the functional composition, based on the general plan of Kaunas City Municipality, introducing high-rise building groups to enrich the tract with new, city-forming dominants.
