As the principles of modern, sustainable architecture evolve, a tendency in the world to creatively overcome previously urbanized areas that no longer meet the needs of urban expansion and development becomes prevalent. Urban areas characterized by intense industrial urbanization on the II-nd half of the XX-th century, are often neglected, unused, insensitive to the environment and / or cultural heritage. In order to achieve a more objective and broader approach, filling the gaps of architectural urban research, the aim to reveal the possibilities of change of Šilutė town, substantiating the potential of waterways and the existing context is raised. The historical development of Šilutė town, heritage values and water reservoirs are reviewed in the research work. After reviewing the peculiarities of the historical development of Šilutė town, it was found that the important aim of sustainable change is to preserve local identity, traditions and intangible heritage. Meanwhile, the direct and inseparable companion of Šilutė town change is a natural element - water together with the urban connection with it over the historical periods. After discussing the role of water in urban change, its current reflection in the urban fabric of Šilutė town was revised in the research. By critically discussing the best practices and development trends of related foreign towns, the peculiarities of their relation to water, the relationship between urban architecture and waterways, possible directions of Šilutė development and architectural insights of urban development were revealed. Having discussed the preconditions of development in the research work, guidelines were proposed, basing on which, the architectural urban idea of Šilutė town change possibilities in the context of waterway infrastructure will be developed.
