A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
CEL Barcelona's new infrastructure
This thesis proposes a speculative approach to urban revitalization in Barcelona’s Eixample district, through a study of speculative architecture, radical urbanism and the city’s historical context and contemporary challenges. Rooted in personal experiences and observations of transitioning from Lebanon to Barcelona, the study aims to blur the lines between public and private realms while reclaiming neglected spaces, notably the building courtyards, for communal use. Through a comprehensive methodology encompassing literature review, site analysis, and design development, the thesis evaluates existing urban interventions and introduces a new infrastructure aimed at revitalizing the built environment, and improving pedestrian circulation. The organism will spread across Eixample, introducing CEL, a new infrastructure for all. CEL, a manifesto for the future of urban living, draws from personal experience and historical context to address the critical issues facing Eixample today by proposing a system that is adaptable, inclusive, and sustainable. CEL invites us to reconsider our relationship with public space, challenging the status quo and encouraging a new way of thinking about urban development. As cities around the world grapple with similar challenges, CEL offers a model that can be adapted and applied to create urban environments that truly serve the needs of their inhabitants. CEL makes us reconsider the global push to privatization. If further divisions between social classes are to be made, tensions will arise, and the problems will intensify in the future. But if you give everyone an equal head start, with the same infrastructure and opportunities for everything from leisure to self-expression, a surmountable change can be made.
