Interaction forces between huge cargo vessels and quay walls
The berthing maneuver of huge cargo vessels causes high reaction forces. To avoid damages to the ship and the quay walls, rubber fender systems are installed to absorb the kinetic energy of the berthing vessel. In order to analyse the entire berthing maneuver it is essential to understand the mechanics of a berthing vessel and to determine the force-deflection behavior of the rubber fenders in real conditions. Therefore, rather small rubber fenders are tested. The results of these tests can be applied to bigger identically built fenders. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.
