A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

Palliative care intends to ease the last months of life of seriously ill people and help them remain dignified until the end of life, even though they experience not only physical but also emotional, psychological, social pain. The Master’s work aims to deepen and understand the principles of such a place that would allow the suffering person to feel as good as possible in such a difficult time. The M.Arch thesis consists of researching the development of palliative care architecture and the need for such facilities in Vilnius, analyzing analogues, forming the main guidelines for the design of such facilities, according to which the palliative care center in Žvėrynas, Latvių str. 70 is designed. The chosen location is close to Vilnius city center while also being surrounded by nature, enabling the most important goals of the project: to maintain connections with society and nature. The building consists of a day center, a stationary ward, administrative premises and a transformable space for religious ceremonies or concerts.
