Blockchain technology and real estate: a viable combination?
This paper is written as response to the financial difficulties recognized in the real estate and housing industry due to the impact of the Covid-19 crisis. The current problem is that it is yet unknown if the relatively traditional real estate and housing industry can be transformed with the use of blockchain technology to decrease the financial impact of future crisis on the industry. Information is gathered on the industry itself implementation of blockchain technology in other industries to determine its viability in the real estate and housing industry, using one of the central players in the industry as a case study. We concluded that blockchain technology is indeed a viable technology for the real estate and housing industry. However, it has an impact on the industry structure due to disintermediation and an emphasis on IT in the parties involved. This will increase the importance of cybersecurity.
