A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Living the public space, exploring the urban ambiances of the tramway of Constantine, Algeria
The deployment of the tramway in Algerian cities has considerably modified public spaces and their uses. This article questions the tramway’s capacity to improve the quality of the crossed spaces and how these are perceived and experienced by users. This analysis is carried out from the exploration of the urban ambiances generated by the Constantine tramway through surveys with users of these crossed public spaces. It shows that the tramway creates reassuring ambiances, thus contributing to the security of public spaces. However, the urban ambiances generated by the tramway remain unattractive and not very lively due to the devitalization of existing commercial activity and the lack of leisure activities, consumption amenities and green spaces. The ability of the tramway to improve spatial quality and create convivial ambiances depends on architectural, landscape, functional and social factors, and requires urban planning support operations and a participatory approach.
