Zero Energy Office Building Design and Management
The problem of reducing dioxide carbon emissions has become crucial due to the global warming. The transition from having buildings that spend a vast amount of energy to buildings producing their own energy is vital. The main purpose of this thesis was to inspect the process of implementing a nZEB project starting from the designing phase to the commissioning. The project was based on a student competition aiming to encourage and raise competence among new generations by designing an oval shaped structure that would provide a new home for a multi-disciplinary company. Throughout the thesis, the most viable options regarding renewable sources that can be applied in buildings in Finnish climate were studied. Firstly, a BIM model that would serve as a guide for the upcoming actions was created using Revit. After defining the right loads and load combinations, the structural and foundation design was modelled in RFEM and LimitStateGeo for the latter. Further on, information from reliable sources in the internet and previous school studies was gathered in order to perform a nZEB. In addition, method statements about the workflow were described. The results of the thesis showed that performing near zero-energy buildings in Finland is possible by combining the right renewable resources options. An HVAC system that would reduce the costs and raise the efficiency of the building by improving the indoor air quality was proposed. BIM models were drawn up and quantitative risk mitigation tables were created to make the project flow smoother.
