D2.1 Requirements: context of application
Increasing flexibility is key for the reliable operation of future power systems with very high penetration levels of Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES). In this scenario, the most significant source of flexibility is Demand Response (DR). The DRIvE project intends to develop and validate a fully-integrated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure consisting of interoperable DR-enabling energy management solutions for residential and tertiary buildings and a platform for effective and secure management of flexibility at the level of the distribution grid. This report discusses the various aspects of the technology upon which the DRIvE development will build. The DRIvE solution should comply with both legacy building automation protocols and emerging smart grid communication and cyber-security standards. It should also include extended capabilities of state-of-the-art forecasting and optimisation algorithms and have a user interface attractive enough to engage end-users into modifying consuming habits.
