"What is architecture if not a motivation? Motivation as an internal need, as a drive to achieve something, as a willingness to make an effort. Curiosity and the desire to overcome the resistance in a project. The realisation that architecture is only done justice when we acknowledge that a certain inadequacy is inevitable. Definitely not complacency. But the pleasure of hard work which allows for proud beauty. The pride of a human being that dares to create. The romanticism of the artist in his workshop who keeps working day and night. Motivation as a justification of the decisions and choices that are made. Possibly also a responsibility that is taken. To third parties, and obviously with respect to the numerous regulations, standards, obligations and best practices. But especially, and perhaps in spite of this, an intellectual responsibility: a search for relevance, even though it may sound arrogant. Because uselessness and irrelevance are not an option. And, once again, the realisation, the necessity, the pleasure and the optimism of this revolt. Motivation as a projection, possibly taking into account society, for the broad context, for the surroundings. The reason why one wants to become an architect. What can be achieved with architecture: to change the world and make it better. Awareness of the exponential complexity of the world, of the endless network of causes and consequences, of the reality of coincidence and necessity. The challenge of navigating in choppy water. Finally, motivation because of the seriousness of the undertaking and the potential of beauty. A certain spontaneity is not impossible when attempting to achieve this, on condition that iron discipline and boundless ambition are present. Because despite its impossible nature, perfection – which means completion in its Latin etymology – is the only horizon, with the rejection of ease as a condition, and one’s own fulfilment – satisfaction – as a consequence."
