Mitigating Building Collapse in Nigeria Through Effective Project Quality Management Practices
The alarming increase in building collapses in Nigeria has raised urgent concerns regarding project management practices within the construction industry. This study delves into the root causes of these collapses and proposes robust project management strategies to mitigate such incidents, safeguarding lives and infrastructure. By conducting an extensive literature review and analysing existing research, this study unveils many factors contributing to building collapses. Some of the key issues identified include poor engineering design, shoddy construction practices, utilization of substandard materials, neglect of maintenance responsibilities, and overloading of structures. The research also investigates the influence of socioeconomic factors and the crucial role of government policies in tackling this pervasive problem. Emphasizing the vital role of efficient project management, this thesis explores various approaches and methodologies that can significantly enhance construction quality, promote adherence to safety standards, and foster accountability. Moreover, it delves into the potential of cutting-edge technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) to revolutionize project coordination and communication, ensuring seamless execution. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, construction professionals, and local communities. It advocates for stringent enforcement of building codes and regulations, robust quality control measures, and comprehensive training and capacity-building programs for construction personnel. The findings of this research contribute to the existing body of knowledge surrounding building collapses in Nigeria. Practical and insightful, the proposed project management strategies provide a clear roadmap for preventing future incidents, fostering sustainable development, and prioritizing the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens. Ultimately, this study offers invaluable insights ...
