A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This project is about designing a housing area to accommodate a portion of the growing population of Skellefteå, following the establishment of Northvolt Ett. The process, research and design takes reference in architectural characteristics of Norrland, findings from a site visit and historical housing for workers of industrial towns. The result is a program of around 90 housing units divided into apartments, row houses and single-family households on a plot called Bergsby Strand in Bergsbyn, outside central Skellefteå. The program includes additional functions such as garages, storage sheds, shared planting gardens, a green house and a playground. The main architectural qualities of the project are steadily anchored to the context of Norrland, in regards to the cold climate and the premises of living on northern grounds. These are: the farstu - a small room separating outdoors and indoors, the roof overhang - which is generously dimensioned to cope with heavy snowfall, and the shed, a small separate building for storage and housework.
