Sustainable Branding: Opiskelijakunta Kaakko
To build a more sustainable future for all, it is crucial to promote sustainability to help protect the environment, promote social responsibility and bring economic benefits. The student unions in Finland have a vital role in affecting student’ lives. With such influence they could raise awareness and educate members about the importance of sustainability and sustainable development. To achieve this purpose, developing a sustainable brand is one way to do it. Since the foundation of the student union Kaakko, sustainable branding was never considered or explored. Therefore, the goal of the thesis was to find out how a student union could develop its sustainable branding, and to understand the way a sustainable brand and adopting sustainability practices benefit the student union Kaakko. The theoretical framework explored sustainability, sustainable development and sustainable branding concepts. Also, the steps of building a sustainable brand were included in the theory. In the empirical part of the thesis, qualitative research methods were used to find answers to the research questions. In-depth interviews were used to gain a deep understanding of the topic from knowledgeable individuals in the student union’s work and sustainability. Also, benchmarking was used to study another student union’s best practices in sustainability. The study showed that developing sustainable branding in the student union Kaakko requires a comprehensive approach that involves implementing sustainable practices, collaborating with other sustainable organisations, educating and engaging the members, and developing concrete sustainability guidelines. It was also shown that it is essential to improve the brand image and brand identity to emphasise the existence of sustainable practices inside of the union. The student union Kaakko can build its reputation as a leader in sustainability and attract like-minded stakeholders who share its values.
